Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena says he will not retire in 2020 when the next Presidential Election is due.
Addressing the May Day rally of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in Batticaloa today, he said that people have inquired from him about his plans, for which he declared that he will not be retiring in 2020 as there is a lot more to do for the nation as Head of State.
Speaking at the rally President Sirisena said every politician ”should be honest and the people shouldn’t be deceived for the sake of power”.
Furthermore, he stated that some politicians are trying to take over power without any program in place, so the Sri Lanka Freedom Party hopes to use the past experiences and initiate a new program for the sake of the people.
He also stated that the government is dedicated to strengthening national reconciliation and that certain political opponents are insulting and criticizing the many programmes carried out by the government to foster unity and reconciliation.
“We have still failed to implement a clear process that builds trust within all communities to prevent the reoccurrence of a war in this country.”
He stated that problems cannot be solved through war or guns and that they can only be resolved through humanity. “That is the sign of a developed society.”
