Suryakumar Yadav was appointed India’s T20 captain on Thursday, succeeding Hardik Pandya. His leadership will commence with a three-match series against Sri Lanka later this month.
All-rounder Pandya served as vice-captain to Rohit Sharma in the India team that clinched the T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa in the final. Following the victory in Bridgetown, both Rohit and batting star Virat Kohli retired from T20 Internationals, leaving a leadership gap.
Rohit will captain the team in the one-day internationals next month, which will feature three matches in Colombo. Shubman Gill, who led a second-string India team in a five-game T20I series in Zimbabwe, has been named vice-captain for both the T20 and ODI squads.
Suryakumar Yadav and Pandya have been excluded from the ODI squad in Sri Lanka reportedly to manage their workload, although the BCCI has not provided official clarification on the selections.
The Sri Lanka tour will also inaugurate Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as India’s head coach, succeeding Rahul Dravid.
