NPP’s Anura Dissanayake likely to win Presidential election, despite a second count underway, oath ceremony tomorrow

NPP’s Anura Kumara Dissanayake is close to registering victory in the Sri Lanka Presidential elections despite a second count under way sources confirm.

The Chairman of the Election Commission, R.M.A.L. Ratnayake officially announced the counting of second preference of the two leading candidates of the 2024 presidential election, in view of the prevailing situation of the vote results.

Mr. Ratnayake stated that accordingly, all the other candidates except for the National People’s Power (NPP) candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Samagi Jana Sandhanaya candidate Sajith Premadasa will be disqualified from the race.

Media in Sri Lanka report that after the Election Commission announces NPP presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the winner of the 2024 presidential election later today, Mr Dissanayake will be sworn in as the new president during a modest ceremony at the Presidential Secretariat tomorrow morning (22). Fifteen ministers could be sworn in just after that.

Meanwhile senior SJB MP Dr. Harsha De Silva said conceded defeat tweeting on X that ‘they campaigned hard for SJB presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa but it is now clear NPP presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake will be the new President.’

He added saying ‘In the spirit of democracy and goodwill, I called and wished my friend the best in the arduous road ahead,” he said.’

Foriegn minister Ali Sabry also took to X to congratulate Mr Dissanayake.

Tamil party ITAK MP MA Sumanthiran also echoed similar congratulatory message.
