The International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation visiting the island has announced that it will maintain close collaboration with Sri Lanka’s economic team to determine a date for the third review of the IMF-supported program.
“We are encouraged by the authorities’ dedication to advancing reform initiatives,” the global lender’s Asia Pacific Department Director said in a statement concluding the visit to Sri Lanka.
He further emphasized that the IMF remains a strong ally in supporting Sri Lanka and its people and is fully prepared to help the country achieve its economic reform objectives.
An IMF team led by Mr. Krishna Srinivasan, Director of the Asia Pacific Department, visited Colombo from October 2-4, 2024.
During the visit, Mr. Srinivasan held meetings with President Dissanayake, Prime Minister Amarasuriya, Minister Herath, Governor Weerasinghe, Treasury Secretary Siriwardena, and other stakeholders.
He noted that there was consensus on the need to continue safeguarding and building on the significant progress that has helped guide Sri Lanka toward economic recovery following one of its worst financial crises in 2022.
At the close of the visit, Mr. Srinivasan issued the following statement:
“We had constructive discussions with President Dissanayake and Sri Lanka’s economic team regarding the economic and financial hurdles facing the country. We agreed on the critical need to continue safeguarding and reinforcing the significant achievements that have aided Sri Lanka’s journey toward economic recovery since the onset of its severe crisis in 2022.
“We are encouraged by the authorities’ commitment to persisting with reform efforts. The IMF remains a reliable partner, dedicated to supporting Sri Lanka and its citizens, and stands ready to assist the country in realizing its economic reform targets. The IMF
