Sri Lanka President to name 23-member Cabinet tomorrow-local media

Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will name a 23-member Cabinet tomorrow and will hold the portfolios of Defence & Finance,  local Sunday Times reported today.  This is following his party’s spectacular victory in the parliamentary elections on Thursday.

The newspaper also reported that Harini Amarasuriya will be reappointed as Prime minister in the new government, while Minister Vijitha Herath will be sworn in again as foreign minister.

The President will appoint deputy ministers to all ministries, which will see a combination of relevant subjects under respective ministries, the report further claimed.

Dissanayake’s coalition, the National People’s Party (NPP)had just three seats in the previous parliament but scored a landslide victory in Thursday’s general election, winning a two-thirds majority in the 225-member house with 159 members elected.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s sweeping coalition election win this week underlined widening support for his leftist policies, but he faces the test of steering the nation’s recovery from a financial crisis with an inexperienced set of lawmakers, Reuters reported earlier.

The Sunday Times also said that though national list nominee Bimal Ratnayake’s name was mentioned to be the Speaker, he is now likely to function as the Leader of the House considering his previous experience in Parliament.

Political analysts opine voters were drawn by the NPP’s cry for change in the political culture and an end to corruption, because they perceived the parties that ruled Sri Lanka so far caused the economic collapse.

Dissanayake’s promise to punish members of previous governments accused of corruption and to recover allegedly stolen assets also raised much hope among the people.

Top NPP official Tilvin Silva described the victory as “complete and one with political weight,” because voters from all corners of the country voted for a single program. He especially thanked Tamil voters in the north for trusting a leader outside their stronghold.

“We have very well understood the weight of this victory. The people have placed immense trust on us and we must keep that trust,” he said.

Meanwhile , President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will present the new Government’s policy statement during the ceremonial sitting of the 10th Parliament on 21 November at 3 p.m.

The policy statement, a constitutional requirement under Article 33(a), will outline the Government’s plans and legislative priorities for the coming term.

The session will officially begin at 10 a.m., with the policy statement being delivered later in the afternoon.

Following this, a three-day workshop for newly elected MPs on the parliamentary system will be held from 25-27 November.

Registration for new MPs will take place between 18 and 20 November, with Parliament employees’ leave cancelled during this period.
