WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Tuesday during a news conference with Israel’s prime minister that the U.S. should “takeover” the war-torn Gaza Strip.
Gaza “should not got through a process of rebuilding and occupation by the same people,” Trump said, adding “the U.S. will takeover the Gaza strip… we’ll own it.”
“Level it out, create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area,” Trump said of his proposal.
The extraordinary announcement upends decades of U.S. policy toward the Middle East. It is likely to be met with strong resistance from Palestinian leaders and Arab nations.
Trump says he sees the US having “long-term ownership” of Gaza.“I see it bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East, and maybe the entire Middle East, and everybody I’ve spoken to — this was not a decision made lightly — loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing it and creating thousands of jobs with something that will be magnificent,” he said.
Trump proposed last month to “just clean out that whole thing.” He said then that the territory’s residents could be relocated temporarily or long term.
Trump indicated Tuesday that all Palestinians living in Gaza should be relocated. He did not rule out U.S troops in Gaza to secure the territory.“As far as Gaza is concerned, we’ll do what is necessary,” he said. “If it’s necessary, we’ll do that. We’re going to take over that piece, and we’re going to develop it, create thousands and thousands of jobs.”
Once rebuilt, Trump said Gaza could be repopulated with “the world’s people,” including Palestinians, and said it would be the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
