Sri Lankan news web portal Sri Lanka Mirror revealed an alleged audio tape of a secret telephone conversation between the slain ‘Sunday Leader’ editor Lasantha Wickrematunge and ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Their conversation indicates that they had been very close friends. However, Rajapaksa was the president when Lasantha was murdered on 08 January 2009.

Colombotelegraph.com website published an article containing a list of telephone lines tapped on the orders of the Rajapaksa regime, and among them were those of Wickrematunge as well as the then opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The article was published on 08 September 2008, and Wickrematunge was killed three months later.

Public assistance sought to identify suspect
Meanwhile, police have sought public assistance to identity a suspect in the Wickremetunge murder.
A sketch of the suspect, drawn in accordance with witness accounts, indicates him to be around 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches tall and has brown-coloured and oblong shaped eyes.
Police headquarters ask that any information regarding the suspect be relayed through telephone no. 011- 242 2176, 011-2380380, 071-8305528, 071-8349505, 077-3291500 or 071-8070207.
An intelligence member by the name Premananda Udalagama was arrested on a charge of having abducted the journalist’s driver, and subsequently released on bail.
The Mt. Lavinia magistrate’s court has issued an order prohibiting Udalagama from entering Army camps.
