Dr Rajith Senarathne Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine says he was offered the Premiership by the main parties (SLFP, UNP and SLPP) ahead of the No Confidence Motion on the Sri Lankan Prime Minister and UNP leader held last week but declined the overtures.
This is in the wake of the recent No Confidence Motion against the incumbent Prime Minister Ranil Wickramsinghe which was initiated by the Joint Opposition group in the parliament led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Speaking at a ceremony he said many heads of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna had invited for meetings secretively but he had rejected them. He continued saying that he was not a person to reach the heights of being a Prime Minister by betraying his current leaderships.
“Representatives of all three parties showed me the calculations in terms of votes I would recieve but I rejected such discussions” he said.
The Prime Minister defeated the no-confidence motion in the parliament with a 46 vote majority after a 12-hour debate on Wednesday where a vote saw 122 legislators back Wickremesinghe, while 76 MPs voted to remove him. Twenty-six members of parliament were absent during the vote.
