Julen Lopetegui: Real Madrid appoint Spain boss as their new manager

Real Madrid have confirmed Spain boss Julen Lopetegui as their new manager.

Los Blancos have been on the lookout for a new boss since Zinedine Zidane’s sudden decision to quit after the Champions League final.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with the Bernabeu post but they have opted to move for Lopetegui – who only extended his Spain contract a month ago.

He has now agreed a three-year deal with the European champions and will officially take charge after the World Cup in Russia.

Lopetegui took Spain training as normal on Tuesday as they continue their preparations in Krasnodar.

Lopetegui spent time at Real Madrid as a youngster but managed just one senior appearance for the club and also coached their Castilla side.

He took charge of Spain following Euro 2016 and will be targeting World Cup glory this summer.

Spain open their account against Portugal on Friday before Group B matches against Tunisia and Iran.

The 51-year-old has previously been in charge Spain’s youth sides while his last club job was an unsuccessful spell with Porto.

He began coaching in 2003 as assistant manager to Spain’s Under-17 team.

He managed Spain at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level before moving to Porto.

His first task is likely to be making a decision on the future of Welshman Gareth Bale.

The former Tottenham star admitted he was considering a move away from the club after his brace in the Champions League final.

Manchester United are leading the chase for Bale but Lopetegui may attempt to keep him at the club this summer.
