Sri Lanka recalls its Qatar Ambassador- Govt Sources

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Qatar Mr. A S. P Liyanage has been recalled, government sources today said.

The Ambassador was seen at an embassy function this morning, to commemorate the 71st Independence Day of Sri Lanka.

Sources said President Maithripala Sirisena had dispatched the letter of recall to Mr. Liyanage this evening.

Mr. Liyanage was embroiled in controversy recently on charges of trying to take over a Sri Lankan school in Qatar.

Colombo Telegraph reported that some students of Stafford Sri Lankan School Doha were prevented from sitting for the first semester examinations in January 2019 as they had not paid their school fees. This was under the orders of Ambassador Liyanage and who also instructed the school to rounded up all the children who could not sit their exams into a classroom and had proceeded to further ridicule them by filming them off their mobile phones.

As per CT, parents had then proceeded to the Supreme Council of Education in Doha Qatar, to make an official complain regarding this issue.

Ambassador Liyanage had officially made an announcement and ordered the school to take such measures for non-payment of school fees in January, during an address to the school authorities. He also had blamed Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena saying for not accepting his resignation despite tendering it many times.
