Sri Lankan president asks police chief, defense secretary to quit following attacks

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has asked the police chief and defense secretary to quit following the Easter Sunday suicide bomb attacks on churches and luxury hotels that killed 359 people, two sources close to the president said on Wednesday.

The sources declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter amid accusations within the government of intelligence failures ahead of the attacks. Former Army Commander General Daya Ratnayake will be appointed as Defence Secretary shortly replacing Hemasiri Fernando, according to reliable sources. Gen. Ratnayake served as Army Commander from August 2013 till February 2015.

Parliamentarian Wijedasa Rajapakshe says he has written to President Maithripala requesting him to arrest Defence Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and IGP Pujitha Jayasundara over “criminal negligence”.
