DUTCH football authorities have decided to declare the Eredivisie over, with NO winners. Ajax and AZ Alkmaar were separated only by goal difference at the top of the division; however the title will not be awarded this season.
The Dutch FA were given the power by UEFA to call the league off following UEFA guidance yesterday which dictated that should the government state that completing the season was impossible, they would be able to end the league. Earlier this week Dutch PM Mark Rutte banned professional sport until September meaning that the league was inevitably going to be declared over.
The reports came as the Dutch FA held a meeting with clubs, and unions representing coaches and players.
The season was declared over on Tuesday when the Dutch government extended a prohibition on public events to Sept. 1 in an effort to curtail the spread of the new coronavirus, which has caused more than 4,000 deaths in the Netherlands.
Ajax were top of the Eredivisie standings, ahead of AZ on goal difference, with nine rounds of matches to play when the season was suspended, and the two teams will now fill the country’s two places in the 2020-21 Champions League.
But AZ have released a statement saying they are considering their options after indicating displeasure with the judgement, particularly in relation to the awarding of European places.
‘Impossible’ to complete the season
A KNVB statement read: “Unfortunately, with the cabinet’s most recent corona measures, it has become impossible to complete the 2019/2020 season of professional football competitions in time – it will be crystal clear to everyone involved, from supporters and players to directors and referees, that public health always comes first.
“The professional football board, after consulting clubs, players and coaches, and with the approval of the Supervisory Board, has decided to stop the 2019/20 competition and to allow the allocation of European club football seats based on the current league table.
“This is in accordance with UEFA guidelines. In relation to promotion and demotion, it has been decided not to promote and not to be demoted.”
