Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appoints new Cabinet Ministers and State Ministers

‪Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed a 28 member cabinet and 39 state ministers after an overwhelming majority under the island’s proportional representation system.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, his brother was sworn in earlier this week as the Prime Minister.

Among the new faces in the cabinet was Namath Rajapaksa who was appointed as the Minister of Youth and Sports while Ali Sabry was sworn in as Minister of Justice.

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa polled 6,853,690 votes (59.09%) at the General Election 2020 and secured a total of 145 seats in parliament including 17 National List seats.

The new ministerial structure consisting 28 Ministries and 40 State Ministries was announced by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa through an extraordinary gazette notification.
