Sri Lanka Health authorities today cremated the dead body of Abdul Sheikh Carder (84), despite an order by Galle magistrate court to keep the body until the government decided on the controversial cremation order of all COVID19 victims.

The body was creamated today at the crematorium in Dadalla, Galle after Director General of Health instructed police yesterday to cremate the dead body as per the government order on disposing COVID 19 victims.

He had also instructed the police to convey instructions police received to the court before the disposal.

Galle Magistrate court had earlier ordered to seek health advise and keep the dead body untill government reach a final decision on burials after victim’s family moved to court refusing to consent the cremation.

Sri Lanka applies mandatory cremation-only policy for COVID 19 victims after local expert advised that dead body may contaminated the water sources underground. Muslims and Christians bound by religious reasons usual bury the dead, have been protesting and requesting the government to reconsider.

Today’s cremation was done without the consent from the family and on state expenses, police and hospital sources said
