Sri Lanka gov selects island in Gulf of Mannar for burial of COVID19 victims

Sri Lanka government is in the process of finalizing a plot of land in the Iranaitivu Island in the Gulf of Mannar to bury the remains of COVID-19 victims in Sri Lanka, according to Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella

The island was selected by the Technical Committee of the Health Ministry.

The minister added that many plots of land in other places in Mannar and in Ampara were also considered for burials over past few days of discussion and a formal announcement after finalizing the location and obtaining necessary clearance in this regard.

Health Ministry will also issue fresh health guidelines to be followed for the burial of remains of Covid victims.

The Government announced that it permitted the burial of Covid victims after carrying out cremations for a period of 11-months, which was objected by many, including the Opposition, civil society and the Muslim community in Sri Lanka.
