Sri Lanka’s Opposition the Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa has threatened a No-Confidence Motion against the Government.
The SJB says it is in the process to obtain signatures for the No-Confidence Motion against the Government has commenced.
An impeachment motion will be tabled against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa if he does not step down, SJB warned.
He reiterated the need to abolish the executive presidency and establish a constitutional democracy with checks and balances, including the appointment of independent commissions.
The Opposition leader further emphasized that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will not work together with the current president, as it does not have faith in such a government.
“Not only should the President step down, but the executive presidency should be abolished,” he pointed out.
Mr Premadasa continued adding that an interim, temporary, or caretaker Government cannot function under an executive presidency.
Such a combination will be a betrayal of the nation, he said the SJB will never engage in such political deals which are against the wishes of the public.
MP Sajith Premadasa said his party will consider engaging in discussion on the future course of action if the discussion is held with a group that does not consist of a single member from the Rajapaksa family.
He reiterated that if the Government and President do not heed the proposals of the SJB and the calls of the public, then the SJB will be forced to submit an impeachment motion.
“Either lead, follow, or get out of the way,” MP Premadasa said concluding his speech.
