President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is set to make a special statement at 9pm tonight and speculation on who will step into become next Prime Minister was rife.
President is likely to invite candidates to the PM position, to form an interim government temporarily.
The President was reported to have had a meeting with former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe late afternoon today. There were no further details available but speculation over Mr Ranil stepping in was high.
However sources say President is likely to give an open invitation tonight to all parties if the themes of his recent tweets was anything to go by.
Former Minister Namal Rajapaksa also tweeted in similar fashion requesting the President to appoint an independent party if no one was willing to step in.
Meanwhile former President Maithripala Sirisena says political parties and the team of independents have submitted three names for premiership to President: Nimal Siripala de Silva, Wijedasa Rajapaksa and Dullas Alahapperuma.
Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) set out conditions if it was to form a government and was categorical that they would not step in unless the President resigns.
