7 Sri Lankans land on Indian coast seeking refuge; 83 others have came since March

Two Sri Lankan families, consisting of seven members, arrived on the Indian coast seeking to be granted the status of refugees. The economic crisis on the island nation has led to 90 people arriving in India seeking refuge since March 22.

Among the seven who arrived on Friday, June 17, four are children and three are adults. They arrived in India due to the economic crisis in the island nation. The seven are being taken by the marine police for further investigation.

The 83 others who came since March 22 are currently at the Mandapam refugee camp in Rameshwaram.

So far, Sri Lankan nationals from Trincomalee, Mannar Yazhpanam and Vavuniya have come to India seeking refuge amid the ongoing economic crisis. (VIA India Today)
