Sri Lanka former CID Chief exposes lapses in 2019 Easter Attack investigation

Former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Shani Abeyesekera, who once headed Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has exposed major intelligence lapses during the inquiry into the Easter Sunday attacks of April 21, 2019. He described the attacks as a meticulously coordinated crime, pointing to a conspiracy behind them.

Abeyesekera identified a particular group involved in the attacks and called for deeper investigations to link vital evidence. He underscored the importance of testimony from Anzeer Maulana, who reported receiving a phone call from one of the attackers, seeking assistance to escape from the Taj Samudra hotel on the day of the bombings. CCTV footage reportedly showed Jameel, an attacker who failed to detonate his bomb, receiving a phone call before departing the hotel.

He also detailed the suspicious actions of Jameel after leaving the hotel, including his stay at a lodge and interactions with the authorities, raising serious concerns about the intelligence unit’s response.

Additionally, Abeyesekera expressed alarm over misleading intelligence reports, which initially linked earlier violent incidents to the LTTE, only for later investigations to reveal the involvement of the National Thawheed Jamath. He criticized the poor quality of intelligence, suggesting that it not only hindered the investigation but also jeopardized national security.

He called for a comprehensive review of intelligence procedures to avoid similar shortcomings in the future.
