Israel Launches Retaliatory Strikes Against Iran

What we know

  • Iranian state media reported that explosions have been heard in Tehran as Iran braces for Israel’s retaliatory action. Israel confirmed that it had launched “precise strikes on military targets in Iran.”
  • The Israel Defense Forces said the strikes were in response to “months of continuous attacks” from Iran. On Oct. 1, Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel
  • The strikes today came as Israel intensified its campaigns in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon
  • Secretary of State Antony Blinken finished a whirlwind trip to Israel and Saudi Arabia, where he attempted to get Hamas and Israel to agree a cease-fire and calm spiraling tensions that have raised fears of a region-wide war.

The Israel Defense Forces said tonight that it is conducting “precise strikes on military targets in Iran.”

The strikes, it said, were in response to months of attacks from Iran against Israel. World leaders have been awaiting Israel’s response to a barrage of missiles that were fired from Iran at Israel on Oct. 1.

“The regime in Iran and its proxies in the region have been relentlessly attacking Israel since October 7th — on seven fronts — including direct attacks from Iranian soil,” the IDF said in a statement. “Like every other sovereign country in the world, the State of Israel has the right and the duty to respond.”

Iranian state media are reporting explosions inside the country’s capital of Tehran.

The Iranian State Television Service, or IRIB, reported sounds of explosions in the city.

Explosions were heard near Iran’s capital of Tehran and nearby Karaj, Reuters reported, citing local media.

The Israeli military action comes after Defense Minister Yoav Gallant vowed a “precise and deadly” response to the more than 180 missiles Iran targeted Israel with on Oct. 1, some of which were intercepted with the help of the U.S.

Last week, during the leadup to the Israeli attack, reports emerged that the Israeli Defense Forces presented a list of potential targets to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Gallant as officials conducted “sensitive coordination” with other countries in the Middle East.

US Air Force F-16 fighter jets arrived in the Middle East from Germany on Friday ahead of the expected strike, according to US Central Command. The region has been bracing for Israel’s retaliation to Tehran’s major missile attack earlier this month, as it also wages war on Iran-backed militant groups in Lebanon and Gaza.
