COLOMBO, April 28 (Xinhua) — Sri Lankan authorities have initiated an investigation into a foreign currency payment made by the Department of Posts to the United States Postal Service that has not been received, Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa said Tuesday.
The payment, amounting to 625,000 U.S. dollars, is now under examination following confirmation from the United States Postal Service that the funds have not reached its account. The Department of Posts has begun an internal inquiry, while the Criminal Investigation Department is conducting a parallel investigation.
The case has drawn attention due to its similarity to an earlier incident involving a 2.5 million USD Treasury transfer that also failed to reach its intended recipient.
Jayatissa stated that such financial discrepancies are subject to institutional-level reviews, with law enforcement stepping in once formal complaints are made. He indicated that the latest issue has occurred on more than one occasion, prompting further scrutiny into the processes through which the payments were executed.
No further details have been released on the transaction mechanisms or the progress of the investigations as inquiries continue into both cases
