Updated: Sri Lanka’s UNP Decide to appoint a Leadership Committee to Finalize Reforms

UNP Group and Working Committee confirmed to appoint a leadership committee that will finalise reforms for the party by the 30th of April.

The Leadership Committee elected via a secret ballot comprises of Ruwan Wijewardene, Harin Fernando, Akila K, Ranjith M.B., Navin D., J.C. Alawatulawa, Mangala S, Nalin Bandara, Ajith P, Eran W, Sajith P and Ravi K.

Meanwhile Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake shed precious little on what’s being discussed at the working committee and parliamentary group, although mentioning that it was decided that party leadership should not be changed immediately but other positions should be changed.

Insiders say incumbent leader Ranil Wickramsinghe is not prepared to give way to structural changes despite vast majority voicing their opinion for changes

He is proposing two deputy leaders: Sajith Premadasa and Dr Rajitha which may seem a tactic to dilute Sajjith’ s power. This was rejected by the Committee.

Significant majority have recommended Imthiaz Bakeer Marikar as General Secretary, they added.

“Incumbent leadership however seems to want to delegate responsibility to another subcommittee to take decisive on posts which effectively means the PMs on a spree to buy time” they added.
