Amid the chaos around Lopetegui’s departure on Friday morning, the 50-year-old former Real Madrid captain was asked to step in from his role as sporting director of the national side to take over ahead of their tournament opener against Portugal in Sochi on Friday evening.
President Luis Rubiales said they had been “forced into the decision”.
On Tuesday, Real Madrid announced Lopetegui, who has been in charge of the national side for two years, signed a three-year deal to become their new head coach following the departure of Zinedine Zidane.
