The decision regarding banning cattle slaughter has been postponed for one month.
Within this time, public and stakeholder opinion will be sought out with regard to the decision.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said on Tuesday (08) that cattle slaughter would be completely banned in Sri Lanka, and that “the rules and regulations in this regard are being currently drafted.”
According to the reports, the proposal was not objected to by any of the ruling party member. However, there would be no ban on beef imports as a redress to meat-eaters.
Rajapaksa has taken this decision in his capacity of the Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.
The Government Parliamentary Group endorsed the proposal, while it has also received positive responses form the Buddhist clergy.
