The Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) has arrested a person in Dematagoda today (13) for promoting extremist ideologies in the country.
The arrestee, a 60-year-old resident of Muruthawela, Mawanella, had been arrested for spreading Wahhabi and Jihad ideology and was the former chairman of Jamaat-e-Islami.
It has also been revealed that the arrestee is a close relative of the suspects arrested in the incident of breaking of the Buddha statues in Mawanella.
Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana added said that the suspect who has been identified as a leading figure in inciting ethnic disunity and spreading fundamentalist ideologies in a manner that harms the Muslims in Sri Lanka, had also published articles on Wahhabi and Jihad ideology in the magazine ‘Al Hasanat’ published by the Jamaat-e-Islami.
The suspect is to be remanded in custody pending a detention order under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
