Jailed MP Ranjan loses Parliament seat

The Speaker of the Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced today (7) that Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake’s seat is vacant.

He also announced to the House that the Secretary General of the Parliament Dhammika Dassanayake has informed the Elections Commission that the seat had become vacant.

Ramanayake was jailed for four years rigourous imprisonment over contempt not court charges in January.

A subsequent case he filed to prevent Parliament unseating him was dismissed by the Court of Appeal earlier this week.

Supreme Court also dismissed his plea for a review.

Former UNP MP Ajith Mannapperuma is likely to replace Ramanayake as he is the next in preferential votes from Samagi Jana Balavegaya from Gampaha district.
