#SriLanka | Key electricity plant breaks down threatening more power outages

More power cuts threatened Sri Lanka as the key Norochcholai coal power plant has become offline following the islandwide blackout yesterday, according to Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) spokesman Sulakshana Jayawardena.

The Norochcholai coal power plant supplies a large amount of electricity to the National grid – approximately 2500- 2600 megawatts of electricity is supplied to the entire country on a daily basis, with the Norochcholai power plant supplying 810 megawatts.

CEB officials said the power plant was off-line due to the power failure yesterday and it will take 2-3 days to reactivate it. The officials further said that there could be power cuts in some areas in order to balance the power demand.
