Reliable sources have informed that with the impending resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday (09), President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is expected to invite Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to form a government.
If the opposition is not ready to form a government, the president will invite all parties in parliament to form an all-party government, the sources said.
Main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) in a statement says that they have agreed to be part of a national program to solve the current crisis based on the proposals submitted by Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL).
SJB says that it believes the proposal put forward by the BASL to abolish the executive presidency as the fundamental requirement in resolving the current economic and political crisis in the country.
Therefore, the SJB insists that the party along with its coalition will support a national program to resolve the current crisis, based on the proposals put forward by the BASL.
The Chief Prelates of the three Chapters, including the Malwathu and Asgiriya Chief Prelates, and a group of independent parliamentarians who left the government have already proposed to the government to form an all-party interim government to help the country recover from the crisis.
In the event Sajith Premadasa is unwilling to form a government, discussions are underway to form a government with a team headed by Patali Champika Ranawaka, it is reported as per Sri Lanka mirror.
